Why the 2027 outlook matters

Sources reviewed 5 September 2026

WMO: Could this event be historic? ↗
WMO says continued strengthening could take this event beyond its four-decade monitoring record, with effects on global temperatures lasting into 2027.
NOAA: How strong could El Niño become? ↗
The August outlook gives a 69% chance of a historic event in late 2026 and over 90% odds of a very strong event through autumn and winter 2026–27.
WMO: The forecast into early 2027 ↗
The international forecast shows near-certain persistence through February 2027, with potential for major shifts in temperature and rainfall.
Canada: What El Niño means here ↗
Canadian impacts are usually strongest in winter and spring, often bringing milder weather to western and central Canada.

A very strong El Niño is often called a “super El Niño.” These are forecasts, not a guarantee of local summer heat or wildfire conditions. Regional outlooks matter.
